A root canal is needed when the nerve of a tooth is infected or abscessed. In order to save the tooth and avoid having it extracted, the infected tissues (blood vessels and nerve) are removed and the canal cleaned.
A medicament may be placed and the tooth temporized to allow healing. Eventually the canal is filled with a pliable filling material that seals the tooth and eventually allows the tooth to be restored to its full function.
Do Root Canals Hurt?
Root canals used to be a painful, unpleasant procedure. Thankfully, those days have long passed! Our dentists and staff at Brandon Dental Care work hard to minimize any discomfort or pain associated with the root canal procedure. Most patients find the experience much more pleasant than expected.
