Teeth Whitening
Have you ever looked at the smile of your favorite actors and actresses, and it was so bright that you wondered how it could be real? While it’s possible the people you see in movies and television shows have excellent oral hygiene skills and perfect genetics, it’s more likely that they have had their teeth professionally whitened. You can do the same thing when you request teeth whitening at Brandon Dental Care.
How Professional Teeth Whitening Works
Having your teeth bleached by a dentist can increase the shade by as much as 10 times. You should notice a difference right away, and the results typically last for several months before you need to consider repeating the procedure. The process involves several steps, each of which our dentist completes in an expert and efficient manner.
Selecting your new shade of teeth
During your initial consultation, our dentist will show you a model of several artificial teeth in different shades. You should select the one that most resembles what you want your teeth to look like after whitening. Once you have chosen your preferred shade, our dentist polishes your teeth with pumice. The purpose of pumice, which feels like small pieces of grain on your teeth, is to remove plaque before starting the teeth whitening procedure.
Preparing your teeth and gums for whitening
To ensure a sterile environment and to keep your teeth dry during the procedure, our dentist places gauze pads inside your mouth. Some patients also require retractors to prevent their tongue, lips, and cheeks from making contact with the bleaching solution.
Applying the whitening solution
Our dentist rubs the exterior of each of your teeth with a bleaching solution that penetrates multiple layers of tooth enamel to bring out their natural brightness. Teeth whitening solutions contain either carbamide or hydrogen peroxide that bleaches your teeth and makes them whiter. You then relax in the dental chair for up to 60 minutes after the bleaching gel activates. Our dentist uses a curing light to activate the bleaching gel.
Final Steps
The whiter you want your teeth, the more time you need to sit with the carbamide or hydrogen peroxide on them. However, this usually isn’t longer than one hour. When you have reached the maximum level of desired brightness or one hour, whichever comes first, you rinse the bleaching gel out of your mouth. You may also receive a fluoride treatment if you tend to struggle with tooth sensitivity. Be sure to avoid dark-colored foods and drinks for at least 24 hours after your procedure.
